Offline Access allows the user to create a time-sensitive PIN on the desktop client, enabling them to log in to the SmartEncrypt client and access encrypted files for a configurable period of time without an active internet connection.
The default Offline Access expiry period is set to 48 hours but can be configured as required. The expiry period dictates how long before a user is required to reauthenticate against the server after creating their Offline Access PIN.
Offline Access can be set as a global configuration that applies to ALL users, or can be applied on an individual user basis. Any Offline Access settings configured for individual users override global settings. Once enabled, Offline Access can be configured by the user via the System Tray/Taskbar icon context menu.
If selected, users are prompted to create a PIN that they then use in place of their usual username/password to log into the software when an internet connection is not available.
Good to know
1.Offline Access expiry countdown begins from the time that the PIN is created, not from when the PIN is used to log in. For example, if a user creates an Offline Access PIN, but does not use it for (say) 8 hours, then they will only have 40 hours remaining to continue using the software in offline mode until reauthentication is required (i.e. 48 hours in total or as configured).
2.Once Offline Access has expired the user will be required to re-authenticate against the remote server while connected to the internet.
3. If a user logs in while connected to the internet AFTER a PIN is created, the PIN will be invalidated, and the user will need to re-establish their offline access configuration. This is because the preferred method of authentication is via the remote server and takes precedence over Offline Access during the authentication process.
